There is a practical reason why to drink the milk coffee from a bol: so that the croissant or a piece of baguette can be dunked into it. In France, it was common for people to receive their first bol at the age of 6. In many places in France it is still a tradition that your own bol is added to the coffin. Each bol is handcrafted, painted and gilded with 24k gold.

Kurinuki, in Japanese ‚to hollow‘, is a technique relating to a specific traditional Japanese hand-forming process. The diameter and high walls of this bowl make it possible to beat the matcha with the bamboo whisk (Chasen) and obtain the desired fine and creamy foam. The large opening allows the matcha to express all its flavours.
